THE COMPARISON BETWEEN BRITISH ENGLISH AND AMERICAN ENGLISH IN PRONUNCIATION
CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
A. Background
Language is a system of arbitrary, vocal symbols which is permits all people in given culture, or other people who have learned the system of that culture, to communicate or to interact, according Finichairo (Alwasilah, 1993:82).
Among a lot of Languages, there a Language which is very strong its influence in the world that is English. As for English a lot of its manner, there are British English, American English, African English, and Australian English.
English usage in other countries has traditionally followed one model or the other. Throughout most of the Commonwealth, the spoken English has its roots in the British version, though local expressions abound. Canadian English is something of an exception to this, taking its cue from both the UK and the US.
British English (BrE) is the form of English used in the United Kingdom. It includes all English dialects used within the United Kingdom. American English (AmE) is the form of English used in the United States. It includes all English dialects used within the United States of America.
The English language was first introduced to the Americas by British colonization, beginning in the early 17th century. Similarly, the language spread to numerous other parts of the world as a result of British trade and colonization elsewhere and the spread of the former British Empire, which, by 1921, held sway over a population of about 470–570 million people: approximately a quarter of the world's population at that time.
Written forms of American and British English as found in newspapers and textbooks vary little in their essential features, with only occasional noticeable differences in comparable media (comparing American newspapers to British newspapers, for example). This kind of formal English, particularly written English, is often called 'standard English'. An unofficial standard for spoken American English has also developed, as a result of mass media and geographic and social mobility, and broadly describes the English typically heard from network newscasters, commonly referred to as non-regional diction, although local newscasters tend toward more parochial forms of speech. Despite this unofficial standard, regional variations of American English have not only persisted but have actually intensified, according to linguist William Labov (2006).
There are also differences in the English spoken by different groups of people in any particular region. Received Pronunciation (RP), which is "the educated spoken English of south-east England", has traditionally been regarded as proper English; this is also referred to as BBC English or the Queen's English. The BBC and other broadcasters now intentionally use a mix of presenters with a variety of British accents and dialects, and the concept of "proper English" is now far less prevalent.
One of the major differences one can find in the British English and American English is the pronunciation of the words in these two different styles. Generally in the British English every letter of the word is pronounced, where as in the American English they keep some words silent that is they don’t pronounce some letters in the words. For example, if a word ends with the letter “r” then in the British English they pronounce the sound of “r” but where as in the American English they don’t pronounce the sound of the letter “r”. In words like ‘brother’, ‘weather’, etc… they keep the sound of the letter ‘r’ silent. And also some words are pronounced differently as they appear. For example, the Americans pronounce the word “start” as “star”, keeping the sound of the letter “t” silent, here both the words are valid and this makes the wrong meaning for the listener.
A person may speak with sounds very different from those of his hearers and yet be clearly intelligible to all of them, as for instance when a Scotsman or an America addresses an English audience with clear articulation. Their speech can not be described as other than ‘good’. But if a speaker with an assent similar to that of his hearers articulates in a muffled way so that they cannot readily catch what he says, his way of speaking must be considered ‘bad’(Daniel Jones, 1956:4).
I feel challenged to analyze about Language comparison between British English and American English. Because both of languages have many differences, although visible in a flash is same. This research I made the title about THE COMPARISON BETWEEN BRITISH ENGLISH AND AMERICAN ENGLISH IN PRONUNCIATION.
B. The Statement Research
After describing the pronunciation illustrated above, the writer identifies two problems consisted of the similarities and differences between pronunciation in British English and American English. So, the writer submits it to the following question:
1. What are the forms of pronunciation in British English and American English?
2. What are the similarities and differences of pronunciation between British English and American English?
3. What ways will make students easy in learning pronunciation?
C. Purpose of Research
After knowing the analyzed problems in the thesis, hence there are some reach targets by the writer as follows:
a. To know the form of pronunciation in British English and American English.
b. To know the similarities and differences of pronunciation between British English and American English.
c. Suggest and appropriate ways will make students easy in learning pronunciation?
D. Significance of Research
Then, the significance of this writing is expected that this research will contribute to the student. This analysis has several advantages for:
1. The student of Islamic University Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung, especially for students of English Education Department who want to analysis English through comparison comprehensively.
2. The student of other institutions where British English and American English learn and interested in learning British English and American English comparison.
3. English teachers. In the case all English teachers in all level who want to use finding for teaching British English and American English.
E. Rationale
As we know English is international language which is arbitrary for us to learn because of English we know about information, news, customs, cultures and technology in all states in the world. So English is tremendously increasing. In English we can find several dialects (e.g. British English and American English). Therefore, the acquisition among several dialects in English creates problem.
To decrease the problem, we can use the contrastive analysis as alternative ways to analyze the problem of learns English dialect, by contrastive analysis two or more English dialect that are compared. From this contrastive analysis, we will know that the dialect influences the process of communication.
Contrastive analysis is concerned with the comparison of a learner’s inter language (Slinker. 1992). A study of linguistics which analysis the language elements as a target language, the analysis result is compared with the learner’s first language elements. Based on this comparison there will be found some similarities and also differences.
One of methods to understand of language is by analyzing and investigating dialect in English with interview to the user British English and American English and observation about how to teach British English and American English.
Dialect is defined in terms of grammar and vocabulary while accent is a matter of pronunciation. The different regional accents generally coincide with dialect regions. Pronunciation is study of speak sound. Pronunciation is a part of speaking skill that is important role in communication. The pronunciation elements such as: sound, consonant, vowels, syllables, words accent, rhythm, intonation and each element need intention. The study of those elements is called “phonetic”. Though the same line between British English and American English in pronunciation not only has several differences in form, functions, and types, but also it has similarities. Therefore, this analysis will describe both of their differences and similarities.
